Bring on the Education Revolution

What can we learn from Sir Ken Robinson?

After watching the video "Bring on the Education Revolution" I think there is a lot to be learned from Sir Ken Robinson and his theories on education. I found myself listening and pausing and re listening so that I could take notes on some of the key points he was making during the lecture, that just seemed to click with me and my own thoughts on educational process. I really loved his quote from Abraham Lincoln about education that was made in the year of 1862 during the 2nd annual meeting of Congress. The reference was about not rising to the occasion that is difficult but yet rising with the occasion, in the context of education that just makes so much sense to me.

Robinson speaks about how education is not a linear process like we tend to think not everyone can start in the same place and continue on that same path to end up in the same "ideal" place. The educational process is anything but linear as Robinson explains he mentions, that not everyone has to attend college or has to attend college early in their life. I could not agree more with his ideas about this, education should not be a "cookie cutter" as he say we are human and the development of humans and their passions is not mechanical.

Some other key points that he made that I think we can really learn from are his thoughts on children at such young ages having so much pressure put on them to be successful as adults. He talks about three year olds having to be interviewed to get into the best kindergarten and how ridiculous this process is. Robinson says that he does not believe "college begins in kindergarten, kindergarten begins in kindergarten". We could learn a lot from this lecture about life, education and how having passion for what you do for a living is vital for your success and happiness.

What can we learn from Mrs. Cassidy?
Little Kids...Big Potential
We can learn a lot from Mrs. Cassidy's approach to the use of technology in her classroom. I was certainly amazed by what the first grade students were capable of doing in her first video. The level of excitement that the students expressed about working on the projects in her class was very encouraging to me as a future educator.

The first grade students were able to create their own blogs and were very encouraged by the fact that they could see improvement in their work as they progressed through the course. The students in the video talked about how they enjoyed publishing their work for others to see, they also liked that they could read comments from people about their work. Mrs. Cassidy's students showed their knowledge about internet safety by talking about only using first names and not correlating students pictures with their names. As a future educator I can learn a lot from Mrs. Cassidy and how she used technology in her classroom.

I think Mrs. Cassidy had a very interesting perspectives that she expressed in her "Skype videos" she talked about how technology is not going away this really stuck with me. We can see that technology is not going to disappear it is going to continue to progress and become even more apart of our lives than it already is (hard to believe because its in our hands every second already). I also thought it was very shocking that Mrs. Cassidy actually did not use technology in her personal life as she said in the Skype video. But I really like her suggestion when Dr. Strange asked her about where she would suggest students start. She stated that we should start in the area that interest us the most what ever we are most passionate about start there weather it be videos, blogs, photography etc.

I have learned so much already this semester about the ways to use technology and different resources to teach students at the elementary level. I have two daughters that are in elementary school, and I hope that they will have teachers to use some of these great resources in the future. The blogs of the students that are in the same grade level as my daughter just amazes me, that they are getting to experience blogging already.

I was even more impressed by all the resources that are available, as I explored the given resources and then the other ones that I found on my own. I found the fizz

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture

" What can we learn about teaching and learning from Randy Pausch?

This lecture given by Randy Pausch was just so inspiring I can't imagine anyone in the world not walking away from this lecture without a feeling of inspiration in some degree. But as future educators the lecture is just that much more motivational and inspiring. Pausch's lecture is centered around the fact that this is his last lecture because he had been diagnosed with cancer and only had a short time left to live.

But Pausch makes it very clear of his attitude and concentration of the lecture very early on. He clearly doesn't want to discuss cancer or any "home remedies" Randy Pausch instead chose to talk about "how to follow childhood dreams" in his "last lecture" we discussed his life and the trials and tribulations he had been through in his life time, and how to preserve through the brick walls. Mr. Pausch is obviously a very successful man and for him to very casually lecture about his short comings and failures that lead to his success was very powerful.

I can honestly say that I was very inspired by this lecture I took notes and some life lessons from Mr. Pausch's lecture and life experience. Some of my favorite quotes he mentioned in his lecture was "loyalty is a two way street", "apologize when you screw up", "Don't complain just work harder" and last but not least "Don't bail the best gold is at the bottom of the barrels of crap".
